Savages blank Dragons

Blake McGinness passed for two touchdowns and ran for another score to lead the Savannah Savages to a 32-0 victory over the Cameron Dragons in MEC football at Dave Goodwin Field Friday night.

The Savages improve to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the MEC while the Dragons fall to 1-5 and 0-4 in league play.

Savannah scored on their opening drive when McGinness threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to WR Jaxson Steele. McGinness missed the extra point kick.

The Dragons were forced to punt on their first possession and Savannah put together a 60-yard scoring drive with FB Hayden Holt going into the end zone on an eight-yard run with 11:16 to play in the second quarter.

After a CHS punt, the two teams combined for three straight turnovers. Cameron DB Tanner Gordon intercepted a McGinness pass, Savages DB Baley Aldrich picked off Dragons QB Caleb Shanks, and then Dragons DL Levi Marlay recovered a Savannah fumble.

Following a Cameron punt, the Savages went up 20-0 when RB Taylor Gilbert scored on a one-yard plunge and then he ran in the two-point conversion with 1:44 to go.

SHS DB Brant Price then intercepted a Shanks pass on Cameron’s next possession to set up a 14-yard TD pass from McGinness to Gage Brazzell with eight seconds left and Savannah held a 26-0 lead at halftime.

A pass interception by Dragons DB Justin Gans put the Dragons in business at the Savannah 47-yard line late in the third quarter and CHS drove the ball down to the four-yard line, but Savannah held as a fourth down pass attempt went incomplete in the end zone.

The Savages then drove 96 yards and McGinness scored on a 21-yard run with 1:29 left in the game for the final score.

Cameron is back on the road next week with a trip to St. Joseph to take on the Lafayette Fighting Irish.
