Senior Quarterback Caleb Shanks hands the ball off.

Dragons fall 41-6 to Tigers

The Cameron Dragons football team dropped their first home game of the season on Saturday, August 27 against the Excelsior Springs Tigers.

The game was played at 10 o’clock last Saturday morning, after being postponed the night before due to inclement weather.

The Tigers came out strong with an opening drive touchdown, followed by a blocked Cameron opening drive punt, that resulted in a second Tigers touchdown.

The Dragons attempted to mitigate the early 14-0 deficit with Junior Dalton Erickson’s long carry to the opposing red zone. The drive was squandered by an interception that, after a failed PAT, helped the Tigers jump to a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter began on a disappointing note for the home team, when a touchdown pass to Senior Seth Wetzel was revoked due to a holding penalty and the ball was turned over on downs. Wetzel then intercepted a pass on the Dragons’ 23 yard line, getting Cameron the ball back for one play, as another interception was thrown, this time to the Tigers, and ran back for a touchdown, giving the opposing team a 28-0 lead, after a successful two-point conversion. After an additional touchdown and a failed PAT, the Dragons fell 34-0 at the half.

The Dragons attempted a punt fake early in the third quarter, which was ran one yard shy of the first down by Junior Jaxson Frazier. The turnover on downs resulted in a 41-0 gap for the Dragons at the end of the third quarter.

Cameron denied the Tigers the shutout opportunity in the fourth quarter, as Senior Dawson Cox got the ball in the end zone for a Dragons touchdown and a failed PAT. The game ended with Cameron down 41-6, giving the Dragons an 0-2 record.

The Dragons will face the Bishop LeBlond Eagles on Friday, September 2 at Dave Goodwin Field.
