Cameron’s BMX Dynamic Duo

Army veteran Troy Green and his son Kirby “Wildman” Green started racing BMX bikes in April. This is their first year in the BMX circuit and already the father and son duo placed 10th and 8th at State in their respective divisions.

It started out with an ad on Troy’s Facebook feed saying that he might be interested in the sport. Though Troy had some experience with trick bikes when he was younger he had largely moved past the sport. “I didn’t have any connection to BMX, no friends that raced, it wasn’t anything I’d been looking into, just a suggestion that I might be interested, and since I’d been looking for something as a PTSD therapy I gave it a try.”

Thanks to Blue Spring BMX offering a free trail and loaner equipment, Troy decided to give it a go and entered his first race on Veterans Day last year.  He liked it well enough to commit to some practices in mid April and by the start of the official racing season Kirby was interested. “It’s really fun” Kirby explained.

Troy likes what the sport is teaching his son. “This is a sport where there are only three trophies and everybody works hard.  It’s good to know that no matter how good you are and how hard you work somebody else may still be better. When you win one of those trophies you know you didn’t hold anything back.  Racing teaches strength of character and how to adapt to changing circumstances.”

The BMX racing duo competes at Nationals this Friday, September 21, in Raytown.  They are already qualified to compete in the BMX Grand Nationals and in the Race of Champions in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Thanksgiving Day.
